This project was all about the different elements and principles of design. Attached is a link to the google slides that has all the pictures and definitions. This blog post includes five different elements and principles.
Texture: The way things feel or the way they look like they feel
This is a picture of my scarf, you can see the different rises and falls of the fabric, you can tell that it isn't just flat. You can also see some soft edges on the sides which you can imply that the scarf is soft.
Line: A line is made using a drawing tool or brush. It is the path of a moving dot.
This picture is of a stained glass window, it is showing different types of lines both straight and curved along with different thicknesses.
Rhythm/Movement: Rhythm suggest movement or an action. Movement is a sense of motion as the eye is guided through a work of art
You can see in this picture that the dog is moving, his back leg and tail are blurred indicating that he was moving when the picture was taken.
Emphasis: The part of the design that catches the viewer's attention.
I rearranged some of our movies with the majority of them being white and one being black. Because that one case is a different color than the rest the viewers eye notices that and is drawn to it.
Unity/Variety: Separate parts working together to make one unified piece. Gives feeling of oneness or togetherness.
A picture of a shoe rack in my apartment shows unity in the fact that these are all shoes is the unity. The variety comes from none of the shoes being the same, in color, height, and width.
Extension Activity: Once students learn the different elements and principles of design I would have them choose an object that they can describe. The students will be asked to then describe that object in enough detail so that someone could know what they are describing. Their challenge on top of that would be to use at least three different elements or principles in their description. By the end of their writing it should be clear what object they were describing.
