Hidden Safari: We started by learning about different artists that created images of animals and different things that would be found in the wild. We then got to practice drawing pictures using the upside down method. You flip the picture of what you want to create upside down so you focus in on the lines and not on what the image actually is. We then each chose an animal that we wanted to hide in our safari. We drew them with a blue pencil so that they would show up when we used our glasses. Once our animal was drawn patterns using warm colors, yellow, orange, and red, were added on top so you couldn't see the animal. The glasses that were used and created filter out the warm colors so you see the cool colors that you have drawn. (seen in the photo to the right)
Extension Activity: We could have a safari themed day in our classroom. Have everything we learn through the day be tied to a safari theme. Each of the subjects of the day could be related back to the safari theme. Included is a link for how one teacher did a safari day in their classroom. Doing something like this in the classroom would make it very easy to incorporate this safari activity.
