Dot Day: This activity can go in conjunction with the book or can be done separately. For this project we took coffee filter, watercolor paint, crayons, oil pastels, and other media to create our own dots. The crayons and oil pastels were used to show how they resist the watercolor and don't take on color where as the water based markers and such would absorb water and lose their original form. Below are two dots that I made. You can see that there was an attempt to use the crayon resist in the first one my name, and the second with hearts around the tree.
Extension Activity: One way that I would use this activity as an extension would be to use coffee filters as a fun turtle activity in the classroom. Using a coffee filter in a way like we did in class and attaching it to a piece of cardboard and adding heads and feet and a tail (all with cardboard). Then after making these turtles and designing them the way that each student wants to, we can have turtle races. Turtle races are something that I did in elementary, it was a fun activity day that we got to look forward towards and changing it up a little bit in this way can allow students to show a little bit of their personality even on a turtle.
